Darrell Anderson - War Resister
Darrell Anderson's life
changed the day he was told to shoot an Iraqi family and he refused. In
the Spring of 2004, Darrell had been defending an Iraqi police station
that was under fire, and his fellow soldiers yelled at him to shoot at an
oncoming car. Even when it became obvious that the family inside the car
posed no threat, Darrell's comrades told him, "The next time, you open
fire. We don't care."
"I started to think ... what's
it really for? I was willing to die for my country. I thought I was going
over there to defend my country. But that's not what I was doing,"
Anderson said.
When Darrell returned home for
Christmas leave in 2004, after receiving a purple heart for his service,
he decided to flee to Canada instead of returning to Germany, where he
would risk redeployment to a war he had come to consider grossly unjust.
Now Darrell wants to return home to Kentucky. To do so means facing
possible court martial.
Darrell’s actions are
representative of the very best in the American character. Please
